Redis Labs Breaks Database Transaction and Latency Performance over Cloud Instance

November 11, 2014

Redis beats transaction speed and latency performance with 1.2 million transactions per second as tested over an Amazon Web Services (AWS) instance

Santa Clara, November 11, 2014—Redis, today unveiled the results of its latest benchmark using Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud computing resources. Using a single AWS EC2 instance, Redis was able to achieve 1,200,000 transactions per second at <1 msec (sub millisecond) latency.

Redis is an open source in-memory NoSQL database that has taken the developer community by storm. The fastest data store available today, Redis is used for high performance use cases such as high speed transactions, real time analytics, counting and ranking, job management, and social capabilities. Redis was created by Salvatore Sanfilippo.

Achieving a 1.2 million transaction benchmark is extremely costly and complex to achieve using traditional disk resources a database sets. “Redis is alone when it comes to performance, it’s simply the best choice out there,” say Ofer Bengal, CEO & Co-Founder at Redis. “For developers building apps on the AWS cloud, Redis Cloud by Redis is a naturally the best choice to build fast, scalable, and responsive apps.”

The 1.2 million transaction benchmark was performed using:

  • A sharded1 Redis Cloud in-memory NoSQL database server running on a single Amazon instance
  • 3,000,000 objects, each of size 100 bytes.
  • The memtier_benchmark tool client run on a non-server instance using the following command line arguments: `–ratio=1:1 -n 1000000 -d 100 -t 1 -c 50 –pipeline=75 –key-pattern=S:S`.
  • A workload that mixes reads and writes in equal proportions (we have no particular bias towards one operation type over the other and feel this mix better reflects real life).
  • An on-demand c3.8xlarge instance.

“We love Redis because of its speed. With the Redis Cloud cluster, we were able to drop our application’s response time from 700 down to 50 milliseconds with very little engineering effort,” said Tung Nguyen, senior director of engineering at Bleacher Report. “Redis has been extremely crucial in helping us meet the high expectations of Bleacher Report users.”

“Developers building high-speed applications on the cloud are looking for high throughput, low latency and an easily configurable Redis solution,” said Yiftach Shoolman, chief technology officer and co-founder of Redis. “Our new customizable, regular expression-based sharding technology meets these needs exactly.”
